Funk is a danceable, rhythmic, bass-heavy genre of music that originated in the 1960's out of African-American communities. Funk is a mixture of several music genres such as soul, jazz, rhythm, and blues and contains a percussive vocal style, strong bassline, and static harmonies. Several artists associated with the Funk genre are James Brown, Prince, George Clinton, Sly and the Family Stone, and Kool and the Gang. The Funk genre spawned other related genres like Disco and Punk and its subgenres. In the early 80's, Funk merged with Disco and became the genre now known as Synthwave.
